Vision Statement and Overview

Vision Statement:

Three Meadows is a natural sanctuary, a quiet haven and a cooperative community by original intent and sustained effort.

The uncommon vision of Three Meadows’ founders survives in our shared commitment to preserve Three Meadows’ natural beauty, to promote the health and diversity of its natural systems and to protect a sense of solitude befitting its low population density.  Working together as joint stewards, we seek to wisely manage and nurture our shared resources so that the forest, meadow and marsh areas will continue to provide a pleasant rural environment: a place for hiking, nature study, gardening, canoeing, swimming, fishing, raising livestock and beneficial use of the forest.  Our owners association endeavors to gently govern the use and development of these resources.

Three Meadows will best be protected and enhanced as we express, refine and embrace a shared vision.

Overview:

Nestled in the center of San Juan Island, Washington, Three Meadows is a community of 30 parcels of five acres each.  The subdivision has set aside 210 acres as common land which community members enjoy and maintain on a volunteer basis.  Common lands include a 35-acre marsh, numerous ponds, extensive pastures, and native forest dominated by Douglas fir, alder, madrone, big leaf maple, grand fir, western red cedar, hemlock, and a number of Pacific yew.

The community’s covenants preserve and protect the natural character of the land.   These restrictions limit tree cutting, prohibit hunting and forbid commercial uses of individual parcels and common lands.

To ensure the sustainability of 3M resources, agricultural activities are actively managed.  Owners can take advantage of the barn and pastures to raise livestock for non-commercial activities. Most of the pastures have been recently fenced, and the 1905 barn is structurally sound and actively used.

Three Meadows depends on volunteer efforts of its residents to maintain roads and trails, mow roadsides and pastures, keep the barn tidy, mend fences, eliminate non-native plants, and manage the marsh and ponds to enhance wildlife habitat.  Birders should contact the 3M President (3Mprez at gmail.com) to request permission prior to their visit.
